Liquid Crystal Displays

Based on a discovery by Richard Williams in 1962 and six years of research and development by a team led by George Heilmeier, the first LCDs were presented to the world in May 1968 at an RCA press conference. These galleries offer images from the research phase, the press conference kit, and the commercialization of LCDs as wristwatches between 1970 and 1979. The vast majority of images here come from the collection of Louis A. Zanoni, a member of Heilmeier's team, and are reproduced here with Mr. Zanoni's kind permission.
